“You’re not a failure, you’re smart”

Welcome to an epic From the Mouth of Manfriend.

On Friday Manfriend and I made a long-planned trip to Grouse Mountain to do the Grouse Grind.  I had the sniffles and wasn’t feeling 100%, but I thought “2.9 km, that can’t be too bad.”

Manfriend helpfully reminded me “It’s 2.9km with an elevation gain of 2,800 feet that is made up of 2,830 stairs.”

Me: “I can do it.” *cough, hack, sniffle*

We ended up going up the mountain. I had cancelled hiking on Manfriend the last three weeks so I think I was mainly sucking it up for the most part to prove I wasn’t going to ditch him while hiking. He remained silent and never once said anything on the matter, so I’m not sure why I felt I had to a) go hiking while sick and b) tackle this beast.

Kindness Recap

Before I start today’s recap of my Random Acts of Kindness week, I would like to invite you all to enjoy some random facts about me.

1. I love cheerleading movies and tv shows – I wish I could move like that. I’m currently watching Bring It On Again (which is not nearly as good as the first one in terms of plot or anything like that… arguably they both have no plot, but still, the leaping, the twisting!). Best line from the movie “Ya, well, whatever I lose in financial aid, I’ll gain in testicles!”  Side note, I also love that Haley from One Tree Hill is Marnie in this movie.

2. Sometimes I wonder why its so cold in my house and I realize its because Manfriend likes to leave windows open. This morning it was cause he was working out, which is totally fair. The other night he forgot about a window and it was freezing when I woke up.

3. I am not an advocate for instant foods. I don’t think instant rice or instant meals can be good for you at all, all those preservatives. And instant coffee? Don’t get me started. Even Starbucks’s instant Via doesn’t compare to a freshly brewed cup of coffee (but when you have to have it on the go, its pretty decent). However, instant Oatmeal I eat every day. Just add hot water and its breakfast! Preferably along with some fruit, but when I work at 4:30 its the perfect 15 minute break meal.

The MS Walk!

I hope you all had as fulfilling and wonderful weekends as I did! Saturday I spent a lovely day with my family and had a lot of fun watching hockey and playing with the dog, those lazy-kind-of-Saturday things that are so special when you have time for them!

On Sunday, the fundraiser I had been organizing for the Walk for Multiple Sclerosis came to its end! Team Barista, a team of four of us from the Starbucks in my district came together.

My Third Place

Part of our goal as Starbucks baristas is to create a “third place” for customers. A place that is not home or work/school (usually places one and two), but a third place — a place where they can come, be themselves, do what they need to do, have a good conversation if they want, but be left alone in peace if they don’t.

I realized yesterday morning that I have my own third place.

Fighting Mid-Week Blahs (and a cupcake recipe!)

Happy Mid-Week Everyone!

For me its like a Friday, because I have a day off tomorrow, then one day of work on the actual Friday, and another day off Saturday! It’s pretty exciting!

I figured it was about time I do some baking and experimenting! The last time I baked was in early spring, I made some chocolate cupcakes with fondant daisies for spring. You can see them below

Being a Barista

It consistently amazes me that I can go to work at 5am, have the craziest things happen that in many other jobs drive me crazy (people calling in sick, my key breaking in the lock, a sanitizer machine flooding the back room) and come out in such an amazing mood. I’ve finally boiled it down to the plain fact that the company I work for and the people I work with make a huge difference.
